Research Description

Most of dairy cattle are derived from either artificial insemination (AI) or Embryo transfer (ET) in Japan. AI is widely used technique for producing milk and elite calves. ET allow to increase number of offspring compared with AI. ET is a technique that can greatly increase the number of calves that a genetically important. However, super cow have low reproductive activity which is shown as low pregnancy rate wit AI and hard to collect good quality embryo because of negative energy balance. Furthermore, there are various problems with decease in number of embryo collection by continuous treatment of superovulation, aging of donors and different response to superovulation in individual animals. For overcoming the problems, ovum pickup (OPU)-in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been developed. OPU-IVF is contracted by following possess; collection of cumulus-oocyte complexes from cow by OPU, in vitro maturation, in vitro fertilization, in vitro culture and ET to recipient cow. Thus, in vitro production of embryos (IVP) technique is crucial for efficient and stable production of OPU-IVF derived calves. However, IVP derived embryos have poor quality on embryo development and viability compared with in vivo produced those, and many pathologies have also been described in neonates, including abortion and large offspring. Thus, further development and improvement of IVP should determine the “efficient and stable production of dairy cows”. Hence, my topics is to produce and select viable IVP derived embryos. I believe that development and diffusion of IVP technique allow to increase profitability for dairy farmer.

About TUAT's tenure-track program

I believe that setting new lab from “zero” is the big chance for establishing identity as a researcher. I am thinking that groundwork to survive as a researcher is important as well as increasing number of the paper required for tenure. This system is considered environmentally so draw the future vision on research and education after getting the tenure.

Future aspirations

Agricultural science and animal science are quite dynamic studies. I aim education and research which are conscious of commercialization and diffusion of technology as well as basic and applied sciences, which can be fed back to the site. In addition, I will continue to challenge the education and research that combines nutrition, management and reproduction, which is taking advance of FS center.
